A Gallery by the Sea
Be Proactive, Creative, Persistent and Connect
by Jennifer Ross
ActivEntrepreneurTV exists to inspire ‘Activity’ in entrepreneurs from rock climbing, roller
derby, to training for marathons, ice skating, hockey and biking. My November article,
Lights,
Camera, Action…Cast Your Vote, spoke about how doing these videos has connected me to so many
new and inspiring people. This article is about one of those inspiring connections…
In addition to Activities, our videos spotlight entrepreneurs who embody the true meaning of
an ‘ActivEntrepreneur.’ These entrepreneurs realize the significant impact that activity and
health have on their businesses as well as their personal lives.
Brian Kurth is the owner of
VocationVacations, a company that
allows you to test drive your
dream job. We mentioned Brian in a previous article,
Connecting Cross-Country (Part I). He
cc’d his VocationVacations team on an email congratulating Scott Evers, one of his vocationer
alumni on the launch of his new art gallery. A ‘vocationer alumni’ is someone who has experienced
a Vocation Vacation.
I quickly noticed that the art gallery was located in Long Beach, NY. Long Beach is an amazing
and very active surfside town on southern Long Island that is very close to Manhattan - a lot
of surfing, beach volleyball, healthy lifestyles, city-style restaurants, and fantastic art.
I lived there for over 5 years and, besides a great commute to NYC and the soothing sound of
the ocean, you can walk everywhere - restaurants, movies, food shopping, bars - it is such an
active and fun lifestyle.
So I decided to get in touch with Scott Evers - because he took a VocationVacation, pursued
his dream by opening a business in his desired field, and lives in Long Beach. I knew that
Scott was someone I wanted to meet. I interviewed Scott on November 3, 2008 and here is some
of his inspirational story…
Scott Evers went on a VocationVacation several years ago. Scott’s wife had given him a
VocationVacation as a gift to help him clarify and build on his dream of making his art,
specifically photography, a larger part of his life and ultimately a profitable business.
Scott took a VocationVacation in Maine with Nina Fuller, a travel photographer, and it was
one of the greatest experiences in his life. The VocationVacation set Scott on a mission to
fulfill his dream.
Scott’s family and ancestry has been part of Long Beach’s history since the early 1900’s.
Scott knew that Long Beach had an amazing population of artists that were not being properly
showcased…so he set out to change that. After much research and persistence, Scott Evers
opened Evers Place, A Gallery by the Sea, on September 20, 2008. He converted his father’s
original window store into a thematic art gallery that showcases artists from all over Long
Beach as well as works by regional, national and international artists in all genres. At his
opening night on September 20th, Scott attracted over 450 viewers to the gallery.
Scott is an ActivEntrepreneur. He knows that pursuing your dreams takes hard work and persistence
but it is definitely worth every bit of challenge and difficulty. Scott is a very active person
which truly supports his active business lifestyle.
So how does this story relate to networking? We need to recognize potential connections that
appear whether they come to us via emails, in-person, website links, phone calls, referrals,
or magazine articles. And once recognized, we need to make the connection real by making contact.
I read Brian Kurth’s email. I could have just let it go as another amazing, inspiring story
(Brian has many of them!), but instead I recognized a great connection. I emailed Scott’s
wife to eventually make the connection with Scott. It took me a few emails and calls to
eventually connect with Scott - but we did and the rest is history. And Scott is also now
part of the ActivEntrepreneur network. Be proactive, be creative and be persistent in making
connections and pursuing your dreams!
