Making Exercise Strides with Your Baby
I was walking through a local mall around 10AM and I suddenly heard a very high energy group counting, singing, and laughing out loud. I had to look over at what was going on. I saw several children in strollers and smiling, energized moms feeling good and working out. A little later, while in one of the mall stores, I happened to meet the energetic and inspirational woman who was leading the workout. Her name - Adele Arkin, former Wall Street professional turned mompreneur. Adele runs a chapter of Stroller Strides. Read more on the ActivEntrepreneur blog.
Do you need support on moving forward with a new career, project or business? Do you need someone to hold you accountable in order to plan and move forward? Do you want to clarify your goals or life purpose? Then you might need to hire a life coach.
We spoke to Elizabeth Cassidy from Branching Out Life Coaching. Elizabeth is a CTA Certified Life Coach with a rich and diverse background from advertising to stand up comedy. Elizabeth helps clients both individually and in groups to uncover their true aspirations, develop action plans, and celebrate success. Check out www.branchingoutlifecoaching.com for more information on coaching. If you are considering coaching as a business, speak to other coaches about getting properly certified and what it takes to build a successful coaching business. And the best advice would be to hire your own coach to learn and support you through that process.
It all began with a blank canvas for Tom Pellicane, Publisher, and Matt O’Grady, Associate Publisher of Canvas Magazine. They saw a niche that was not filled in Long Island, took the entrepreneurial leap, and went after it.
Canvas is focused on Long Island arts, holistic medicine, renewable energy, and building a community for these important areas. In addition to their magazine and website community, they bring people together through different community events including Green Drinks and Open Mic Night.
I asked both Tom and Matt for some advice for entrepreneurs, especially during such a time of change. They both agreed that besides being truly passionate about what you are doing, you must be flexible. Although you may have a strong vision and plan to get there, you may need to adjust your course while staying true to your mission. Great advice coming from two entrepreneurs who have made a significant mark on Long Island’s art, holistic, and environmental communities. Explore the Canvas community online at www.canvasli.com.
I was recently asked to name my greatest accomplishment. I didn’t have an immediate answer but thought about what could be one of my greatest accomplishments – and that would be crossing the finish line of a triathlon with Team in Training.
So what is Team in Training? Team in Training (TNT) is one of the most innovative fundraising programs, raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Their mission is to cure leukemia, Hodgkin’s Disease, and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
Each season, Team in Training forms teams for specific endurance events, including triathlons and marathons. By enrolling, you receive a 4-5 month training program to help you successfully complete the event, while you raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
TNT is a ‘celebration of life, the human spirit, physical ability, and mental endurance.’ This is one of the biggest challenges that many of you will ever undertake. And because of this, TNT provides dedicated, passionate and very experienced coaches that help you reach your training goals. TNT Mentors, alumni who have successfully completed the program and exceeded their fundraising goals, are also there to support and continuously encourage you.
And if you’re worried about the fundraising goal, don’t! You also have the support of The Society to guide you towards exceeding that goal.
So if you want to reach your personal fitness goals, but would also love to give back at the same time, check out Team in Training (www.lls.org). Your personal fitness accomplishments can make an even bigger difference!

The LI Roller Rebels are an all female Roller Derby League that competes with other WFTDA leagues around the country. (Men’s Roller Derby also exists!) Although from very different professions and lifestyles, these women share their dedication to the sport and the numerous benefits that it brings to their lives – including tremendous exercise, stress relief and camaraderie. If you’re not up for roller derby, check out a local roller rink (they’re still around), find your old skates, and have some fun roller skating!
